Glaucoma services
Glaucoma is a disorder in which the pressure inside the eye increases beyond the normal limit of 21mmhg causing irreversible damage to the nerve and leading to a decrease in vision with eventual blindness. This disease is known to run in families and patients with a family history must undergo a regular evaluation with an eye doctor who specializes in that field. We help in diagnosing and treating you for the same. Glaucoma can affect children, as well as adults, and patients, can experience a decrease in vision, headache, frequent change in their glasses, and in advanced cases loss of side vision with only central vision left intact. The doctor sees these changes as damage to the optic nerve on the fundus (i.e the back part of the eye). Glaucoma can be diagnosed with the help of certain investigations carried out on high-end machines such as OCT ( optical coherence tomography) and Visual Fields, all of which are available. Patients with glaucoma must undergo regular check-ups with these investigations to monitor the progression of the disease. Glaucoma can be treated both medically and with surgery. Medical management of glaucoma includes putting drops in the eye one or two times a day life long to maintain the eye pressure below 21mmhg. In patients who have a cataract, or are not willing to put drops life-long, surgery can be done to decrease the pressure permanently.
