How Cataract Surgery Is Performed

Surgical Steps (Simplified):

Two tiny incisions are made where the cornea meets the sclera. These allow instruments to enter the eye safely.
Opening the Lens Capsule
A small circular opening is made in the front part of the lens capsule to access the cataract.
Phacoemulsification (Phaco Probe Use)
A fine ultrasonic instrument, called a phaco probe, is inserted through the incision. It gently breaks the cloudy lens into microscopic fragments.
Removal of the Cataract
The lens fragments are suctioned out through the same tiny opening.
Lens Replacement (IOL Implantation)
A clear, customized artificial lens (IOL) is inserted into the natural lens capsule to restore sharp, bright vision.
No-Stitch Healing
Because the incisions are extremely small, they usually self-seal and do not require stitches.
